Developing Your Narrative - Synopsis and Treatment
I believe that these terms are for films specifically, maybe not, but I will use them in terms of story writing.
Basically, a synopsis is an extremely abbridged version of an entire tv series/book. so if you are writing a short story with a maximum of 2 pages, it isn't really nesecary.
Treatment:
A treatment is similar to a synopsis, but it is for each individual chapter. In the case of a 2 page short story, it can be the entire story.
Here is an example based on bob the builder.
Bob starts out getting a phone call, it says that he is being arrested for copyright infringement. He then goes outside and talks to his giants evil machines. Then he goes on a rampage around the city all the way to the copyright office and destroys it.
simple, but without it, when you actually write your story, you can fill it with repetitive things and continuity errors.

Developing Your Narrative
So far, if you were to write a narrative. You would just start writing about a person who does this, and maybe this, oh and they can talk to this person etc. But there is a more professional way of doing things.
When creating a story, game, or movie. there are a number of steps that can be used in all of them. the steps that I know of are as follows:
- Synopsis - A short summary of entire story
- Ask yourself - Why would people wanna read this?
- Write the treatment - The story line for each episode (In a book, this would be replaced with each chapter).
- Write the script/chapter/story
- Write a character dossier - A description of each character in your story.
This post, I will focus on the character dossier (because that is what I have done so far).
A character dossier is simple, write a description of each character. It should at least include the name of the character, their age, their gender and a brief description of their personality/part of their history where necessary.
Example
Name: Bob
Age: 30 or 40 ish
Gender: Male
Description: Bob is a builder, he likes to build buildings and drink tea. He spends most of his time working on construction jobs with the help of his evil mutated talking vehicles.
That is an example of a very short one. But you get the picture. The main reason character dossiers are used is this: They give each character a believable personality, and help you remember how they would react in certain situations. Don't forget to include extra information in the description about who they like, dislike and why.
